The Dragon Prince Backgrounds (Minor Spoilers)

So in light of The Dragon Prince season three release on Netflix, and since I'm back working at the studio I got an opportunity to snag a fraction of the paintings I did for the show over the 2+ years I worked on it. I'll post more soon as there are still TONNES I'd like to rescue and post here.

For almost all of these I was simply a color designer but since a lot of these were matte paintings I had some creative sway over the environment design. I was often provided some sort of line art (sometimes more or less detailed, and sometimes mere chicken scratch) or a rough 3d model as a base from there I basically had free reign (with my art directors input ofcourse) to design the colors, textures and lighting as I saw fit. I think this job had the perfect balance of personal creative freedom and outside direction so it was a blast.

This piece was mostly me. My co worker did a line art pass on my previous version (scroll down to see) which I then expanded upon. I got feedback from the client on that previous version that the buildings looked too modern. This is much better.

I don't know what I was thinking when I started this background. I spent over a week obsessing over the first version only to confront myself with the reality that I needed to restart. It it all turned out for the best though!

The kitchen is the first background I worked on and still one of my favorites.

This was another early set, it went pretty straight forward and it was a lot of fun.

Honestly, this set looks like trash in the show. It was a constant struggle between us the designers and the limits of the 3d capabilities of the show

There are some sweet (and eastereggy) murals on the walls of this set that I made BUT YOU CAN'T SEE THEM IN THE SHOW :(((((

A lot of the times I was tasked with painting in the base colors and texture of a set and then pass that on to another background painter to render to finish. That is what was done here.

More than a little chaffed you couldn't see my two butt buddies in the show :( I put a few easter eggs in the show's backgrounds that I'll point out in another post.

This task was technically on my list but I don't think I was actually supposed to do it... I took the liberty of showing how the corrupted sunforge might look mimicking an solar eclipse and the process of transformation it goes through.
